The World at War: 50 Years Later

This book began when the Associated Press sent out on its wire services an announcement that the 50th anniversary of the Allied invasion of Italy was approaching. The Daily Star's wire editor, Charles Sauer, picked up on it and persuaded [the author] to find veterans for a story. After the success of that first article, he researched battle dates and prepared a possible monthly schedule. 

Thanks to the willingness of both veterans and civilians to speak, sharing their private experiences, one story became a series. The two-year series is now a book.

This volume is meant to educate, so that the facts are not forgotten. Lastly, this book is meant as a tribute to those who sacrificed and suffered, and to honor the millions who died.
